Insurers name top cars in crash tests
The U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the Toyota Prius hybrid car fitted with front and side impact airbags scored the highest in crash tests.
The Kia Sedona came on top in the minivan category while the Subaru Impreza and the Saab 9-2X were found to be the best performers among small cars, reports CNN.
The institute tested the 2006 model year minivans and small cars for front and side crash protection. The tests involved hitting the vehicle with a barrier resembling the front of a sport utility vehicle or pick-up truck.
Without the optional side airbags, the Prius earned the lowest rating of “Poor” for side impact protection, the report said. It received the second-lowest rating for whiplash protection in rear impacts because the design of its seats didn’t do enough to protect an occupant’s neck, the Institute said.
Among small cars, the Subaru Impreza, the Saab 9-2X and the Honda Civic performed best in the institute’s tests, earning a “Gold Top Safety Pick” overall rating.
