Insurance and Identity Theft?
About four dozen North Dakotans who recently applied for Medicare prescription drug coverage are in danger of having their identities stolen. Social security numbers and personal information were stolen from a Humana health insurance agent`s car in Minnesota.
Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman says it happened nearly a month ago, and the company should have notified him. Humana apologized to Poolman today. The company says the agent violated Humana`s privacy policy, and will be disciplined.
“We find even more offensive the way people in North Dakota have been treated by sending them a form letter saying, if you have any questions just call our 800 number, our customer service number and we`ll try to answer any questions you have, and by the way, we`ll enroll you in a one year free credit watch,” says Insurance Commissioner Jim Poolman. “What happens if somebody`s identity is stolen? What happens if money is stolen out of people`s accounts? We want to know that those people are going to be taken care of by Humana because of this loss and because of the lack of action by Humana in the end.”
The applications of people from Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska were also stolen.
