Ford and Nissan V6s Duke It Out
More importantly, both engines eventually will see widespread use in a variety of vehicles.
Ford’s new DOHC 3.5-liter V6 makes its debut in the new 2007 Edge but will also be adapted for use in the 2007 Lincoln MKX and MKZ, among other products. The engine makes 265 horsepower and will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It has been designed for use in front- and all-wheel-drive applications.
Ford said the 3.5 V6 will be installed in 20 percent of the company’s North American vehicles by 2010.
Nissan has extensively revised its vaunted VQ-series V6, which now carries the designation VQ35HR. The DOHC V6 makes its debut this fall in the redesigned Infiniti G35 sedan and the updated Nissan 350Z, but ultimately it will be widely used throughout the Nissan and Infiniti lineup.
Nissan says the engine is 10 percent more fuel-efficient than its predecessor and has lower emissions. The VQ35HR is even more powerful than Ford’s 3.5-liter unit; in the G35 sedan, it is rated at 306 horsepower. The G35 sedan will offer buyers a choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
