2009 Nissan Maxima in Green Program
For Nissan, the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) represents a major event. Over the last few years, the Big Apple served as the launch pad for significant new Nissan products. Last year, for instance, the Infiniti EX premium crossover was introduced to the world.
The 2008 edition of the NYIAS is no exception to this trend, as the Japanese automaker unveiled two highly-anticipated vehicles: the second-generation Infiniti FX50 crossover and the completely redesigned Maxima sedan.
The former had previously made its world debut in Geneva, sporting a newly rearranged interior, some cleverly restyled exterior cues and, most importantly, all-new powertrains, one of which is a 390-hp V8.
But the biggest news at Nissan is by far the introduction of the all-new 2009 Maxima, first seen here in New York. For the company, this is an important step, as it solidifies Nissan’s position in market segment it used to dominate a while back.
“The Maxima is our flagship car. It almost single-handedly pioneered the full-size sport sedan market. Since then, we’ve been often imitated, but the car we’re launching here will further enhance the driving experience of our customers,” claims Frédérique Le Grevés, Vice-President of Corporate Communications at Nissan North America.
Totally revised from the ground up, the new Maxima is larger and designed to offer unprecedented levels of handling and fun behind the wheel. Engineers borrowed from the 350Z its sportier, more precise steering and incorporated an upgraded CVT as standard equipment.
Under the hood is a revised 3.5L V6 from the world-acclaimed VQ Series. The compression ratio has been increased in order to bump horsepower figures to 290. “But what sets the Maxima apart from the competition is the overall driving experience, says Mrs. Le Grevés. We wanted the interior controls and layout to be literally wrapped around the driver. While passengers enjoy total comfort, the driver is clearly in charge.”
